Integral Eye Movement Therapy

One eye open

Integral Eye Movement Therapy is a rapid change work process that generates  change in the area of undesired emotional and identity issues. The techniques used within IEMT look to answer the question,

‘How did I learn to feel this way, about that thing?’

Emotional imprinting occurs when a person stores in their mind a new emotional response to an experience or stimulus, which they then carry forward and use in future situations. When a person first experiences negative emotional feelings, they store the memory by thinking, ‘This has happened and that makes me unhappy’. If they continue to keep going back to the stored memory, over a long period of time, they move from just experiencing the feeling of unhappiness and begin to create an identity I am an unhappy person or  I am depressed.

Therefore emotional imprinting happens when a person stores in their mind a new emotional response to an experience, which they carry forward and use in future

situations. Identity imprinting occurs during lifelong development, and constantly evolves and changes.

Once an emotion becomes an identity, it feels like a huge part of your life, because you have in essence chosen to carry it as your identity. This is when you have it with you all the time, just as with other identities.

‘I am a Mother’ or ‘I am depressed'

You can become overwhelmed by the emotion and feel stuck with it.

How does IEMT help?
When we are asked to think about any memory, feeling or thought, our eyes move in certain directions. They do this to search in different parts of your brain for the information that you are asking for.

IEMT works with these eye accessing cues along with the feelings, emotions or identity you are experiencing and helps disassociate the emotion from the stored memories.

The result of this is, the feeling or imagery loses its emotional impact or charge and reduces in its effects.

The change is rapid and effective.

Reconnection and Restore - Tailored Programmes

Emma Toms in the sea smiling

These tailored programmes are based on my own wellness journey. My early adult life was spent in illness, stress and chaos. I always thought I had to add things into my life to make it better. It wasn't until I took a step back, softened my approach and worked from the root up that things began to change.

When I reached the pinnacle of Graves Disease burnout, I was frazzled. My hair was falling out, I had lost two stone in weight, I couldn't sleep or get proper rest, I was anxious, jittery, tired and wired. This was only a small part of my journey with autoimmune disease and stress. It had been building over a number of years until I finally had to say enough.

I steadily worked through the layers of dis-ease, until I reached remission. Not only from Graves Disease but from all forms of autoimmune disease. I am in good health and I intend to stay that way.

It was difficult to find my way through the maze of advice and protocols and they all helped. But the deeper healing came from finding the emotional root cause issues.

When my clients come to work with me they have often had enough of feeling stressed, burned out and overwhelmed by life. Together we unravel and unpick the chaos and dive deeper to find a more grounded and peaceful way to respond to life. From that point on they see a clearer path, to discern what are the right next steps for them.

Sometimes it's hard to see what is possible for ourselves, someone else has to reflect our potential. When you choose to work with me, I start to show you the cues and signposts you've been missing.

Once we complete our journey you have your own compass, torch and map to get you exactly where you want to go.

The work I offer is about getting you into a place of transformation.

This is positive change, guided by what you show me.

Safe and Sound Protocol

Listening through headphones

Who is SSP for?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a therapeutic intervention designed for individuals facing various challenges related to stress, anxiety, social engagement difficulties, and sensory processing issues. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges in alignment with the Polyvagal Theory, the SSP may alleviate a wide range of symptoms;

Chronic health problems
Mental Health conditions
Substance use challenges
Attention and learning differences
Changes in appetite, energy, desires and interests
Difficulty sleeping
Feelings of loneliness and isolation
Difficulty connecting with others

What does the SSP involve?
The SSP is a listening programme, in which specially-filtered music progressively trains your auditory system to focus on sound frequencies resembling that of the human voice. By stimulating the facial and vagus nerves via the middle ear, it sends cues of safety to your nervous system, helping you to feel more settled, engaged and balanced.

Assessment
The SSP is not suitable for everyone. If your current circumstances are contributing to your dysregulation, it is best to wait until things settle down for you before starting the SSP. For some people it is advisable to use the SSP only alongside ongoing therapy.

You will therefore be asked to complete an assessment to screen for contraindications. The assessment also helps me to understand how your nervous system currently responds to challenges. Assuming the SSP is suitable for you, the assessment will inform the individualised programme I will set out for you.

SSP is more suited to working with your provider who understands how the nervous system works, and who is able to regulate themselves, is an important part of retraining your nervous system.

The role of the provider
As your SSP provider, I will guide you through your SSP journey through a combination of in-person or online video sessions and online contact. I will make sure you are fully prepared before you start listening to the music, and will recommend a personalised listening plan for you. I will provide psychoeducation and answer any questions you may have. During the listening, I will monitor your progress and make sure you are progressing through the programme at a pace which is right for your individual nervous system.

The role of the listener
During a listening session, you will listen to the music, whilst engaging in light activity such as breathing exercises, stretches or drawing. It is important you let me know of any feelings or sensations that arise, whether emotional or physical, so that your listening plan can be adjusted to suit the needs of your individual nervous system as they evolve over time. Less is more when it comes to the SSP, so listen to the “whispers” of your nervous system before they become “shouts”! You are listening to and honouring your nervous system’s needs, not simply listening to the music.
